Nothing is more deceptive than memories: we miss a past that never existed
Thinking about yesterday? No doubt many of us have that problem, for some reason we see yesterday as the best part of our lives. We look out the window of memory and find only glorious moments. Believe it or not, your mind is playing a bad joke and what you think you remember, is not so real.
The past you remember wasn’t as real as you always thought
It’s funny what the mind can make us believe. The truth is, it has the capacity to deceive us according to its own interests. You could say that we sleep with our enemy every day, because at the slightest oversight, our mind can make us believe that we can fly and we end up jumping out the window.
Much of our lives are spent thinking about yesterday. No matter if the past was good or bad, our minds will always want to bring it back. This wouldn’t be wrong if it brought it back literally as it happened, but it happens that when we think about yesterday, these memories are already adulterated.
Let’s see what kind of people you belong to. On the one hand, there are those people who find in their past memories incredible, perfect, magical, beautiful moments, memories of places and people that made you extremely happy. You can remember a former partner and relive in your mind the most beautiful memories. Suddenly, you wish with all your strength that that time had never ended, in fact you claim again and again that that time has been the best of your life.
Then there are those people who lived through some trauma in the past and remember it in the most ghoulish and sadistic way possible. So much so that, for no reason in the present, the person cries and fears because somehow remembering that makes them anxious.
Well, you have to realize something. There never was that infinitely dark moment or that perfectly magical moment. There were only exclusive moments that your mind idealized, and it is these moments that your mind accesses when you see or hear something, or when you are in a specific mental or emotional state.
Think, if your ex-partner was so perfect or perfect, why did they leave each other? And if the dark moment in your life was so extreme, how come you’re still alive? Our mind does that many times to keep us alert or to help us drain emotions. But you should not think that it does so in order to make you feel miserable constantly, because as you know the past will never return, and since the future does not yet exist, you only have the present to live fully and forge incredible memories in which then think.
Don’t let your past define you, or affect your current quality of life. Renew yourself every day, build a better version of yourself, and always look ahead.
