No one loses by giving love, no one loses by not knowing how to receive it
You may have heard the following at some point “It is better to have loved and lost than never to have loved at all”. Well, that saying may have a stronger significance for people who have come to feel true love.
He who does not know how to receive love loses more than he who gives it
The world is full of ungrateful people, and among them are those who have not learned to be reciprocal with the love they are given. There is an old story of a humble man who fell madly in love with a princess. The princess was supposed to marry someone, but everyone who approached her was rejected. When this man arrived and stopped just below his beloved’s balcony, he promised her that he would stand in that place for 100 days to show her how great his love was.
The young princess, agreed to marry this young man if he achieved such a feat. And so the days began. The young man endured strong wind currents, a frightening cold at night, a horrible heat in the day, endured rain, hail and even days of snow. He ate very little, yet his determination was so strong that the 99th day had come and he was still standing there.
The young princess would occasionally lean out of the balcony to see if the young commoner was still standing there, but she did nothing more than that. The people of the kingdom and the peasants were in awe of what the young man was doing, so much so that they encouraged the boy every day to keep going and not give up. The boy did not need this as he was sure of how he felt about the young lady. His love gave him all the strength he needed.
However, on the 100th day, just when the deadline was minutes away, the boy turned around and left. No one understood what had happened to the young man. Many believed that he did not really love her. One day when they saw him pass by they asked him why he had left if he was only a minute away from marrying the princess. To which the young man replied:
“For 100 days I stood in front of her balcony enduring the harshness of nature for love of her, yet she did not spare me a single minute of suffering.
People must be worthy of the love that is offered to them. Many times we love excessively, we give everything, so much so that we suffer a lot for that same love, while we see the other person paying us very badly. That is when we must realize that it is not us who are wrong. It is preferable to have a heart with the capacity to love than one that only thinks of itself and is not willing to spare us some of that suffering.
When it comes to falling in love we just have to remember that we must first love ourselves, and that if our love is not being returned, it is better to simply walk away from that person forever. In time, it is the one who will regret it the most.
The princess in this story lost someone who was really willing to give a lot for her. The commoner, for his part, only discovered by loving what was in the heart of the princess and avoided many future sufferings. So he who loves, never loses.
