Science says that helping others makes us happier
From childhood they teach us to be good, honest, hardworking and always willing to help those in need. However, they do not explain to us that empathy does not only benefit the one in need, because the habit of helping others contributes positively to our happiness.
Science has proven this, and we’ll tell you how:
Have you ever heard of endorphin? This is the hormone in charge of producing the sensation of well-being, joy and comfort in human beings. Endorphins manifest themselves when we exercise, laugh, remember pleasant things and also when we spend time collaborating with other people.
Psychological theories have created a term to characterize the feeling of joy we feel when we practice charity: Helper’s high, which in English can be translated as the rise of the helper. Science states that acts of kindness and charity produce a small rise in morphine, not because of the size of the gesture but because of the feeling that is generated through the will to help and the authenticity of the act.
The one who receives the help feels relief and benefits from our good intentions, the helper feels satisfaction and joy for being useful in the solution of a difficult situation for another. Therefore both will be happy and less stressed.
Recently, research has been published on the extremities of our chromosomes (Telomeres) which shows that constant stress significantly reduces them and also causes premature death. In this regard, it is important to emphasize that the more we strive to make our lives happy, full of love and gratitude for those around us, the longer we can secure our lives.
However, we need to be honest and selfless, we need to commit ourselves to true goodness, so that others do not feel that they are being used or are a burden. True goodness and purity will translate into love and happiness. Whenever we desire and strive for the good of others, we end up building our own as well; in unity we are able to go far.
The universe will respond with an abundance of words of love and attitudes of affection, we will always be reaping positive things when we stop being selfish and give a little of our time to those who really need us. So start thinking today what can you do to help the people around you?
Helping others is the fastest way to the life we dream of.
