Work on becoming a good person before you become a good professional
Before you can be a great professional, you must focus on being a great person.
“Know all the theories, master all the techniques, but when you touch a human soul, be just another human soul.”
Carl Jung
When choosing a career there is an important question to be answered: do I like dealing with people, is my life purpose to help others? While we look for an area where we can take advantage of our skills or competencies when we become professionals, what we do should also give us satisfaction. Therefore, those who do not like dealing with other people should look for an occupation that can be done in isolation, with a minimum of personal interaction.
Dealing with the public is facing a person who has his own story and needs, perhaps he is not having a good time and needs our help and understanding. Think about the person who is looking for a doctor, doing so because he feels bad, is sick and in pain; this person is probably also afraid or anxious, weak or vulnerable.
No one, with a clear conscience, chooses to suffer, get sick or depressed. That is why a doctor can never mistreat a patient, be too harsh or avoid feeling empathy. He must always touch the affected person and look into their eyes to understand their condition.
This same principle can be applied to the attorney-client relationship, as most people seeking legal advice are about to face a stressful legal process that may change their lifestyle.
Who among us has not been treated badly by a public body, bank or similar? Or maybe in a store when we try to get some information from the salesman who is supposed to be there to help us.
Good self-esteem is a right
People who are facing a problem have less strength to defend themselves, as their self-esteem is low. Therefore, they will not be able to assert their minimum rights as citizens. It is cowardly to offer our bad moods and discouragement to those who often need the opposite, who would only like to receive a smile. If our task is to deal with people on a daily basis, we must put ourselves in their shoes.
It is our responsibility to treat our peers as beings who have emotions, not as robots, not as iron ones. Therefore, they are not forced to endure, beyond their own darkness, the emptiness of those who should help them. You can be very useful without having to interact with others, writing, working remotely, cooking in a restaurant, researching in laboratories.
There are many alternatives for those who do not know or cannot provide a service to the public. With an occupation tailored to your needs, you can continue to grow as a professional according to your skills and competencies. Deal with people only when you know how to behave like people. It’s that simple.
